There is a cap for how much HP one can lose from a combo, and once the cap is reached the character gets invulnerable and simply falls. Try using Giggs' whirlstick against a character on a wall and you will see this happening. Exception is of course if the character tries to recover with a back flip, in which case the "damage counter" is reset.
